Monte Rosa Hütte
Alpine refuge at 2883 m in Lys Valley, Aosta Valley. Beds: 120. Data from OpenStreetMap; verify opening before setting out.
The “rock crystal” at the foot of Monte Rosa’s Swiss side is a destination in itself: its faceted aluminium shell glitters above the Gorner glacier and can be seen even from the Gornergrat. The approach from Rotenboden crosses the glacier on an equipped, marked route: to be tackled only in good conditions and with a sure step.

History
The first Bétemps hut was built in 1895 by the Swiss Alpine Club. The current building, designed with ETH Zurich and inaugurated in 2009, is a manifesto of sustainable alpine architecture: the aluminium “crystal mountain” covers about 90% of its energy needs with photovoltaics. It is run by the Monte Rosa section of the SAC.

What to bring
A sleeping-bag liner (required in many huts), cash (cards are often not accepted at altitude), a change of clothes and warm layers for the evening, a headlamp, a water bottle. Always book your bed and meals in advance, and let the hut know if you cancel.
What to do there
Enjoy dinner in good company and the sunset from the terrace. Many use the hut as a base for a dawn departure: ask the keeper about trail and weather conditions before setting out, and start light while the snow is still firm. The climbing routes are on the trail pages above.
