Refuge des Grands Mulets
At 3,051 metres on the rocky spur of the Grands Mulets, above the Bossons glacier, this is the historic hut of the classic route up Mont Blanc from the Chamonix side. Ringed by seracs and crevasses, it is one of the most scenic and legendary huts in the Alps: a base for mountaineers, reachable only on the glacier with a guide and equipment.

History
Almost all the early ascents of Mont Blanc after 1786 passed by the Grands Mulets; the first permanent shelter was built in 1853. For over a century it was the only hut on the French normal route, before the Goûter route opened.

What to bring
A sleeping-bag liner (required in many huts), cash (cards are often not accepted at altitude), a change of clothes and warm layers for the evening, a headlamp, a water bottle. Always book your bed and meals in advance, and let the hut know if you cancel.
What to do there
Enjoy dinner in good company and the sunset from the terrace. Many use the hut as a base for a dawn departure: ask the keeper about trail and weather conditions before setting out, and start light while the snow is still firm. The climbing routes are on the trail pages above.
