Refuge du Goûter
At 3,835 metres on the Aiguille du Goûter, this is the key hut on the French normal route up Mont Blanc. The current building, a wood-and-steel ovoid opened in 2013, is a model of high-altitude energy self-sufficiency: it harvests meltwater, generates solar power and treats waste. Booking is compulsory and capped.

History
The first huts at the Goûter date to 1854; the old 1960 sheet-metal refuge was long the last stop before the summit. The new building, designed by the Décalage studio and the Hervé group, took five years of cliff-side construction (2008-2013) and runs entirely on renewables.

What to bring
A sleeping-bag liner (required in many huts), cash (cards are often not accepted at altitude), a change of clothes and warm layers for the evening, a headlamp, a water bottle. Always book your bed and meals in advance, and let the hut know if you cancel.
What to do there
Enjoy dinner in good company and the sunset from the terrace. Many use the hut as a base for a dawn departure: ask the keeper about trail and weather conditions before setting out, and start light while the snow is still firm. The climbing routes are on the trail pages above.
