Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge
Historic Italian Alpine Club hut on Lake Goillet shores, base for Matterhorn ascents.
At the Oriondé the Matterhorn is no longer a backdrop but a presence: the pyramid of the Gran Becca looms vertical above the hut, and in an hour and a half you can climb to the Carrel Cross at the foot of the Lion ridge. The ideal destination for breathing the Matterhorn’s high mountain world without being a climber, with unforgettable sunsets.

History
The refuge bears the name of Luigi Amedeo of Savoy, Duke of the Abruzzi (1873–1933), the great climber and explorer who as a very young man set out from the Breuil for his first Matterhorn climbs before his expeditions to the Pole, Alaska and K2. Standing at the foot of the Italian route up the Gran Becca, it is historically tied to the Matterhorn guides, who accompany aspirants from here to the Carrel hut.
