S1

A short but historically exceptional walk linking the hamlet of Moulin (653 m) near Aymavilles to the ancient site of Pont d'Ael (885 m). Built around 3 BC, the Pont d'Ael is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueduct bridges in the Alps. The structure, roughly twenty metres high, combines a water channel with a roadway above it, showcasing Roman hydraulic and civil engineering at its most elegant. The route covers only 3.6 km with 238 metres of ascent, making it suitable for all fitness levels. The landscape is one of mid-valley hillsides, chestnut groves and Mediterranean scrub. Rated E, with some care needed on uneven ground near the bridge itself. An ideal destination for those combining light hiking with alpine archaeology.
