Jovençan - Col de Vertosan

From the Jovençan alp, at 1,868 metres, the path climbs to Col de Vertosan, a pastoral pass at 2,698 metres overlooking the broad plateau of the same name. It runs 3.8 km with 826 metres of ascent, a hike through rolling pastures, working alps and scattered larch woods. Vertosan is one of the widest and most evocative grazing basins in the area, long tied to transhumance and to the cow 'reines' contests; from the col the view ranges over the ridges between Avise and the Great St Bernard valley. The route is especially well served by cadastre signposting, with around thirty markers along the way. A rewarding, not difficult outing, ideal from summer to autumn.
