TrailS1Description

Fitness level

A demanding outing for both distance and height gain, climbing from the Avisod bridge at 668 metres up the whole hillside to Pointe Chaligne, at 2,611 metres, above the city of Aosta. It passes in turn the hamlets and alps of Chacotteyes and Tsa de Metz, moving from the broadleaf woods of the valley floor to the summit pastures over nearly two thousand metres of continuous ascent. Pointe Chaligne is one of the best-known viewpoints of the Aosta basin: from the top the eye takes in the regional capital and the middle valley, the Mont Blanc massif to the west and the peaks of the Grand Combin and Monte Rosa. The route is 9.8 km with 1,940 metres of ascent: graded E, it is nonetheless long and tiring, for fit walkers, with an early start and a good water supply. Best in summer and autumn.
