TrailS17Description

Fitness level

A long, demanding climb from Gressoney-Saint-Jean to the Ulrich Lateltin bivouac, set in a panoramic spot on the way to the Testa Grigia. The trail climbs the valleys on the right flank among pastures, scree and rocky steps (EE), gaining height towards one of the highest balconies over Monte Rosa's south face. The bivouac, unmanned and always open, is a landmark and shelter for hikers and climbers.

Earth sciences

Geology & landscape

The bedrock is that of the Monte Rosa nappe — continental-crust gneisses and granites, greenstones of the Alpine ocean — carved and polished by the Lys glaciers, among recent moraines and roches moutonnées.

History & culture

This is Walser country: the Alemannic settlers who crossed the Monte Rosa glaciers from Valais in the 13th century left Gressoney the Töitschu language, timber-and-stone stadel and the German names of the peaks.
