Description
From the Cabane de Chanrion climb among tarns and roches moutonnées to the Fenêtre de Durand (2,797 m), the historic crossing between Valais and Valpelline watched over by Mont Gelé. The long descent through the By valley, past waterfalls and alps, returns to Ollomont (1,356 m), where the Tour des Combins closes.
The tour’s last border is a pass full of stories: for centuries herds, merchants and smugglers crossed the Fenêtre de Durand, and in 1943 Luigi Einaudi, future President of Italy, escaped to Switzerland this way. The climb from Chanrion winds among tarns and ice-polished rock, with Mont Gelé and the Becca Faudery as stage wings. On the Valdostan side the descent is long and glorious: the By valley opens like a fan, the torrent’s waterfalls keep you company down to the alps and finally the roofs of Ollomont. The Combins loop closes where it began, beneath the bell tower.

Earth sciences
Geology & landscape
The Grand Combin belongs to the Grand St Bernard nappe (middle Penninic): crystalline schists and gneisses of the Siviez-Mischabel zone, overlain to the south by the calcschists-with-ophiolites of the By valley. The great north wall above the Panossière hut shows the alternation of basement and carbonate cover; the Fenêtre de Durand is carved in the softer calcschists, ever the natural way between Bagnes and Valpelline.
History & culture
Through the Fenêtre de Durand the economist Luigi Einaudi, future President of Italy, fled to Switzerland in 1943; for centuries the pass carried Valpelline wine to the Bagnes alps.
Water sources
Water at the stage's support points (Cabane de Chanrion, Ollomont). On the high ground and at the passes springs are not guaranteed: fill bottles in the valley and at the huts.
Getting there
Cross-border stage: on the foreign sides local public transport applies (PostAuto in Switzerland, line buses in France/Piedmont). Check seasonal timetables; in peak season several access links run by reservation only.
Warnings
- Snowfields possible on the passes until early July
- Book overnight stops in peak season
