Pier Giorgio Frassati Refuge
Great St Bernard refuge with views of Pennine Alps and Saint-Rhémy terraced vineyards. Penultimate AV1 stage before Val Ferret.
Modern and welcoming, it guards the upper Great St Bernard valley on the Alta Via 1: the support point for the Col Malatrà, the key passage facing the Mont Blanc massif, and for the border summits of the Merdeux combe. In summer the hut hosts lively cultural activities inspired by the figure it is named after.

History
The hut is dedicated to Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901–1925), the young Turinese mountain lover beatified in 1990, a symbol of mountaineering lived as friendship and faith: his phrase “verso l’alto” — towards the heights — accompanies the hut. Built with the CAI and its youth sections, it is run with a spirit of welcome reflecting its name.

What to do there
Enjoy dinner in good company and the sunset from the terrace. Many use the hut as a base for a dawn departure: ask the keeper about trail and weather conditions before setting out, and start light while the snow is still firm. The climbing routes are on the trail pages above.
