Description

A closing downhill stage: from the Sella hut descend the royal mule track to Valnontey, the Tribolazione glacier sealing the valley behind you, and return to Cogne across the Sant’Orso meadow, where the Gran Paradiso loop closes.

A farewell descent along the Grand Lauson valley: the royal mule track drops in wide bends towards Valnontey, with the Tribolazione glacier and the walls of the Gran Paradiso closing the valley behind you. Lower down you cross the Vermiana farmsteads and the cool woods along the stream. Arriving in Cogne across the Sant’Orso meadow tastes of things accomplished: before the Romanesque bell tower the loop is sealed. Stay for lunch: Cogne’s cooking — from seupa à la vapelenentse to mécoulin — is part of the journey.

Earth sciences

Geology & landscape

Gran Paradiso, like Monte Rosa, is an internal crystalline massif of the Penninic nappes: augen orthogneisses derived from Permian granites, wrapped in a sheath of calcschists with greenstones — metamorphosed ocean floor the tour crosses at the Lauson, Rosset and Entrelor passes. At the Nivolet the plateaus are carved in the softer calcschists, while the Valnontey walls expose the massif’s gneissic core.

History & culture

Cogne is the home of bobbin lace, brought — tradition says — by Benedictine nuns in the 17th century: the dentellières still work in the village streets.

Water sources

Water at the stage's support points (Rifugio Vittorio Sella, Cogne). On the high ground and at the passes springs are not guaranteed: fill bottles in the valley and at the huts.

Getting there

Aosta Valley side served by VITA buses and connections from Aosta; many valley heads have summer shuttles. Check seasonal timetables at arriva.it / vita-vda.com.
